Ingo Schnauder

Research Interests

• Turbulence in rivers
• Vegetation-flow interaction
• Ecohydraulics

Vegetation and its effects on flow and morphology in fluvial systems are Ingo's key research focus since his PhD. Starting with compound channels and vegetated floodplains, he has also worked on single plants and their biomechanical properties as well as macrophyte patches.

Ingo first recognized the importance of deposited large wood on floodplain ecology at the Tagliamento river in Italy. River restoration using installed or natural large wood is therefore an ongoing research interest.

At TU Wien, Ingo develops lab experiments and conducts field measurements to quantify flow processes associated with wood and vegetation structures in rivers. He has a passion for free-flowing rivers and tries to his scientific knowledge to contribute to their protection.

Key Facts

Ingo completed his PhD in 2004 at from Karlsruhe University (now KIT). He then worked as a Post-Doc at Cardiff, UK at the Environmental Research Centre, and at IGB Berlin. From 2013-2019 he worked at an engineering consultancy before returning to academia as a post-doc at TU Wien.
