Research Interests

• Groundwater data collection, interpretation and modelling
• Groundwater sustainability and vulnerability assessment under climate change
• Groundwater pollution and protection
• Surface-groundwater interaction

As a doctorate researcher, Ameen's research focuses on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in groundwater. His interests revolve around understanding the dynamics and transport pathways of CECs and potential threats to drinking water. He is currently involved in a VIWA2020+ project, where he is investigating the transport of microplastics in groundwater, and then studying their co-transport with pathogens in a highly dynamic riverbank filtration system.

Key Facts

Ameen hails from Lahore, Pakistan. After completing his Bachelor´s degree with distinction in Civil Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, he worked with Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority and various engineering consultancy firms in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia for 7 years. As a hydrologist, he was involved in the planning and execution of small dams, flood risk assessment, devised innovative solutions and strategies for safe drinking water supplies, for projects located in rural areas of Pakistan. Later, he moved to the Netherlands to pursue a master´s degree in Water Science and Engineering; specializing in Hydrology and Water Resources at IHE Delft, the Netherlands. During his master´s degree, he worked on the SALINPROVE project and carried out fieldwork in Mozambique for his thesis “Sustainable development of groundwater resources under salinity and climate change impacts in Greater Maputo, Mozambique”.
